Does Recession Lead to Increased Small Business Formation?

Here is an interesting article I found through alltop.com which was put together by "Small Business Labs". These guys are well know in the business arena fro forecasts and Trend analysis. Here you have it.

We released our annual small business trends list this week. We got a lot of questions related to our forecast that the recession will lead to increased numbers of small businesses in 2009. Many feel the number of small and personal businesses will decline in 2009 due to the recession. Here is our response.

Academic literature has long linked rising unemployment to increased small business formation and rising self-employment. A.R. Oxenfeldt argued in 1943 that when faced with unemployment, many will turn to self-employment. This is referred to as the "refugee effect."

More recently, the paper Does Self-Employment Reduce Unemployment here for a summary). The paper also contains background and citations on the academic research on this topic. And although some studies question the refugee effect, most agree it exists. empirically shows the refugee effect exists for OECD countries (click

U.S. data also shows that in the last 2 recessions small business formation has increased. Below is a chart from Warrilow showing SBA data on small business births and deaths. As the chart shows, small business births exceeded deaths during the prior two recessions.

These data are for employer businesses. We have less historical data for personal business (single person, or non-employer businesses) because the government has only been collecting data on them since 1997. But the 2001 to 2003 recession period saw the number of personal businesses grow from 16.9 to 18.6 million.

And while many forecast errors start with the words "this time it's different," there are several reasons why we think small and personal business formation rates will be higher in 2009 than in past recessions:

1. The costs of starting and maintaining a small or personal business are substantially lower than in past recessions. PCs, the Internet and low cost office and communications equipment make it much cheaper to start a small or personal business.

2. The risks of starting a small or personal business are lower. In the 80's and 90's starting or working for a small business was often viewed as negative by large corporate employers. This meant leaving corporate America to start your own business or work for a small business greatly reduced the chances of returning. This is no longer the case and many larger corporations now see it as a positive.

3. The demographic drivers are stronger than in prior recent recessions (see our trends post for details).

Our Conclusion:

We think the net impact will likely be an increase in the total number of small and personal businesses in 2009.

New "One Minute Marketing" Video Series

Video Marketing #1 - Making Money on Youtube

Ok Everyone, This week I'm going to Provide you with tips on How to Make Money with Youtube by posting videos either to Create Sales or to Create Brand Awareness!

Youtube Is the Number One Free Online Video Service Provider!
Youtube was conceived in 2004 and a short 6 months later was bought out by Google for $1.6 Billion Dollars!

Well it's no wonder why Google did what they did. Just take a look and see how Youtube has Revolutionized the Video Industry. In fact it has grown so large that TV Companies have seen a 36% Decrease in TV viewers since 2004.

So How Can you utilize Youtube to Bring Massive Traffic to your Website?

Well It's quite Simple! Here's how it works:

Ok, so today I'm going to Cover some elements of how to Create A Viral Video! How is it that some of those videos manage to get 1, 2, 3 even 4 Million Views?!

Well that's what will set you apart from those you make it and those who Don't!

There are 10 Video Characteristics that Create Popular and Profitable Videos, I will Cover 2 every week until this module is done. Here are the First 2.

Characteristic #1: Funny

The word "Funny" constantly appears as one of the most typed in phrases to all the search engines on the internet. People on the Internet love to laugh, and equally important, people like to make other people laugh. It lightens up their day. A funny video has a high chance of being sent to friends and probably has the highest probability of causing a viral marketing stir.

Humor can be added to almost any subject, even if it's something that is not inherently funny. Think of weir, exaggerated ways that your product or service could benefit people. Think of Blatantly ridiculous, exaggerated claims that you could make to make your product or service stand out in people's minds!

Here is a Great Example:
This Video was done to advertise a certain File management Software called "Windward Reports". Notice how the video creates such a strong Impression in your mind but yet says very little in the context of the product Services!

Characteristic #2: Weird

Face it, the internet can be a weird place, with weird people, who like to create weird media and enjoy looking at weird things.

Example, Take a look at the following Audi ad
(Optical Illusions).

This is a slick, Professionally produced ad for network TV, but the same concept will work very well - possibly even better on the internet. Just use your imagination and try to think of new - and weird - ways to grab your audiences attention and make them think about your product or service in a new way!

Adopting The Right Mindset: Understanding where You Are & where You want to Go!

To some of you this Chart is very well known, but to some... not so much. Before you Ever Consider starting your Own Business, it is absolutely Critical that you Understand this Chart! It is known as the "Cashflow Quadrant". This chart was put together by Robert Kiyosaki. A very well known Business coach and Leader in the world of Business.

The Basics:

This Quadrant basically Implies that their are Four Types of People when it comes to the ways that they Earn their Money.

The "E" Quadrant
In a very simple phrase E = Employee. Robert explains that the first and most common quadrant that people fall into is the Employee Quadrant. An employee is defined as a person who Earns Wages based on an agreement with a company in exchange for their time and service. People in this Quadrant Value "Security" & "Benefits" more than anything. They also pay the most taxes out of all four quadrants.

The "S" Quadrant
So S = Self Employed. This is a quadrant where many average minded individuals regard as Success. Why? Because the individual works for themselves with no boss & owns their JOB. An example of a person in this quadrant would be a Florist who works in her own shop or a Consultant who owns his consulting firm. These types of businesses usually have no more than 50 people. And the Self - Employed individual works a large amount of hours (80 +) per week. People in this quadrant value "Being their own Boss" & "Doing their own thing". Tax benefits in this quadrant tend to be more favorable and flexible in comparison to the "E" quadrant.

The "B" Quadrant
B = Big Business Owner. This is a quadrant for true business success. A big business is classified as a business with a minimum of 500 people. This type of business could be left alone by the owner for a long period of time and it would still continue to function properly, unlike a business in the "S" quadrant. This group of people could be almost the opposite of the "S". Those who are True "B's" tend to surround themselves with smart people from all the categories. Unlike the "S" who does not like to Delegate work (because no one could do it better), the "B" likes to Delegate. The True motto of a "B" is, "Why do it yourself when you can hire someone to do it for you, and they can do it better?"

The "I" Quadrant
I = Investor. simply said, investors make money with money. They do not have to work because their money is working for them. The "I" quadrant is the playground of the rich. Regardless of which quadrant people make their money in, if they hope some day to be rich, they ultimately must come to the "I" quadrant. It is in this quadrant that money is converted into wealth.

So Why is this important?

In today's Rapidly growing business market, many people are starting their own businesses in the hopes of hitting that pot of gold. However business Failure stats are through the roof. The reason for this is that people are moving into uncharted territory and don't know what it takes to get through it. The first & Most important thing that is needed to bring about success in any quadrant is "Mindset".

Yup! That's it? You may ask, "So you are telling me the reason I'm not getting results and not having the success I want, is because of my Mindset?!!". I'm here to say "Yes, That's exactly It".
Here is the truth that many don't realize.

Lets say you are a successful employee at your job, you are making quota, your boss loves you, you work hard, you put in the hours, you are on time. So in the even you choose to switch jobs to a new company what happens. You move to the new company and you learn the new tasks assigned to at that job and chances are that you are going to be successful at that new job too!!
Now Why is that?

The reason is simple yet Very Profound. It is the very reason as to why so many people can be a success at their job yet a huge failure at running their own business.

Here is the Secret.... When you move from one job to another you are remaining in the same Quadrant, the "E" Quadrant. But when you are moving from a Job to starting your own business, you are moving from the "E" Quadrant to the "S" Quadrant. And moving from one quadrant to another not only requires you to learn new Tasks associate with it but Most Importantly requires a Shift in your "Values and Morals". A total shift in your "Mindset" that is.

Each Quadrant has it's own set of Values and Morals that you must adopt. If you don't then you have failed to acquire the Right Mindset, which in turn leads to failure. So in order to become successful in the "S" Quadrant, then you must learn to think like an "S" person. This applies to all quadrants.

So what are the Differences?

This part is usually one of the hardest parts of understanding which quadrant you really are in. And the reason for that is, You have to be 100% honest with yourself. You have to listen to that inner voice that says "Hey John, You Really do think like an E". Here is how you can identify what Category you really fall into.

If you want to identify what quadrant you are in you must start thinking about your values. The words a person speaks often times reflect exactly what they are thinking and what Quadrant they are in.

"E" Quadrant Words

A person who might come from the "E", or Employee, quadrant might say:
"I am looking for a safe, secure job with good pay and excellent benefits."

"S" Quadrant Words

A person who comes from the "S", or self employed, quadrant might say:
"My rate is $35 per hour."
or "My normal commission rate is 6 percent of the total price."
or "I can't seem to find people who want to work and do the job right."
or "I've got more than 20 hours into the this project."

"B" Quadrant Words

A person operating out of the "B", or Business owner quadrant might say:
"I'm looking for a new president to run my company."

"I" Quadrant Words

Someone operating out of the "I", Investor quadrant would say:
"Is my cashflow based on an annual rate of return or net rate of return?"

Conclusion:

If you are a business owner who is struggling or maybe a New Business owner, It is vital to understand that when you move into the arena of Business, you have to not only Master the tasks involved with that particular profession but also adopt the Corresponding Quadrant Mindset.
Corresponding Quadrant Mindset & Mastery of Business Skills work hand in hand to create results.
One without the other is incomplete, but what needs to be learned first is the mindset. This is the missing piece of the puzzle for many Entrepreneurs.

Adopt the Right Mindset and you are ahead of 90% of your competition!
